Day 4 of the Ashes and resuming at 25 for none, chasing a deficit of 220 runs, I watch the first 5 or 6 overs and Strauss and Cook seem to be doing ok, so I decide to leave them to it and I'll just check through the night.
This was my modus operandi for the last series down under and it was usually not good news, with me timing my viewing with an England collapse or the last few overs of each losing match, so I was expecting my first check to see Englan 5 down still not having levelled the scores, so at over 100 for no wicket just before Lunch it was a pleasant surprise.
So I left them to it.
Alarm set for 6am, I was planning to see the last hour before going to play golf.
I turned on the TV, expecting to see England Fielding and the Aussies ready to knock off the last few runs for an opening win and a demoralised England.
My bleary eyes managed to establish that England were still in and were at 280 for 1!!!!
Strauss was out having scored 110 and Cook on 120 with Trott on 43.
The Aussies were not looking so cocky now! In fact they were relieved to get off the pitch early due to bad light!
At 308 for 1 a healthy position with a day to go.
